Remove Background from GIF & Images Online (GIF BG Remover)
Free Online GIF & Image Background Remover (Make GIF Transparent)
Use this free online GIF background remover to make backgrounds transparent or swap background colors in animated GIF, APNG, WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL (JXL), PNG, and JPG files without losing animation timing. Whether you are creating transparent Discord/Twitch emotes, stickers, sprites, or removing a green screen, this tool provides multiple keying algorithms and real-time previewing right in your browser.
Background Removal Methods
- Global Color Key: Replaces all pixels matching the target color across the entire image with transparency. Ideal when the background color does not appear inside the foreground subject.
- Contiguous / Magic Wand (Flood-Fill): Removes connected background pixels starting from the outer borders (all 4 corners, 8 edge points, or a custom point you click). This preserves interior areas of the subject that share the same color as the background—for example, keeping white eyes, teeth, or text intact when removing a white background.
- Chroma Key (YCbCr Color Space): Separates color (chrominance) from brightness (luminance) to cleanly key out green screens, blue screens, and studio backdrops even when there are shadows, uneven lighting, or gradients. Pair with Suppress color spill (Despill) to neutralize green/blue reflections on subject edges.
- Luminance / Alpha Matte: Converts pixel brightness into smooth alpha transparency. Use it to extract dark ink drawings, signatures, or line art from white paper, or to isolate glowing particles, fireworks, and neon effects from a black background.
Edge Refinement & Anti-Aliasing Controls
Choose from preset swatches (White, Black, Green screen, Blue screen, Magenta), auto-detect the corner color, or click directly on the preview image with the eyedropper. Fine-tune your cutout using:
- Color tolerance (Fuzz %): Controls how strictly colors are matched (0–100%).
- Soft alpha ramp: Creates smooth, anti-aliased partial transparency along color boundaries (ideal for PNG, WebP, APNG, and AVIF).
- Erode / shrink edges: Strips away 1–10 pixels of leftover halo fringe around the subject.
- Feather edges: Softens sharp or pixelated cutout borders.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove a white background without erasing white parts inside my subject?
Switch the method to Contiguous / Magic Wand (flood-fill from outside edges). Instead of removing every white pixel in the image, it only removes white pixels connected to the outer border, leaving interior white details (like eyes, clothing, or text) untouched.
What does the Fuzz percentage do?
Fuzz controls color matching tolerance (0–100%). At 0%, only pixels matching the exact hex color are removed. Higher values include nearby shades—useful for compression artifacts, anti-aliased edges, slight gradients, or shadows. A value between 3% and 12% works well for most solid-background GIFs.
Why does my GIF have a colored outline left after removing the background?
GIFs only support 1-bit transparency (each pixel is either 100% opaque or 100% transparent), so anti-aliased edges blended with the old background color can leave a halo. Increase the Fuzz % slightly, enable Erode / shrink edges (1–2 pixels) to trim the fringe, or enable Suppress color spill for green/blue screens.
Why does my output GIF have flickering or ghosting artifacts?
This can happen with heavily optimized GIFs that use partial frame updates. Click the "unoptimize" link above the form to coalesce the source animation first, and keep "Don't stack frames" checked when making a transparent background.
