What is JPEG XL?

JPEG XL (JXL) is a next-generation, royalty-free image format designed to eventually replace legacy formats such as JPEG, PNG, and GIF. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, full alpha transparency, high dynamic range (HDR), wide color gamut, and animation — all in a single, versatile format. Animated JPEG XL files can achieve excellent compression efficiency, producing smaller files than GIF or APNG while preserving significantly more detail and color accuracy.

How to convert video to animated JPEG XL

  3. Choose the output resolution and frame rate (FPS) for your animated JXL.

Tips for best results

  • Frame rate (FPS): Higher frame rates produce smoother animation but increase file size and processing time. 10–20 FPS is a good range for most use cases.
  • Resolution: Reducing the output size significantly lowers the file size. Choose a smaller width if you don't need the full original dimensions.
  • Loop count: Set to 0 for infinite looping, or enter a specific number to control how many times the animation repeats before stopping.
  • Clip length: Keep clips short (a few seconds) to avoid very large output files. Animated image formats are best suited for short loops, not full-length video playback.

Browser support

Note: Browser support for JPEG XL is currently limited. As of 2026, Safari is the only major browser that supports JXL images natively (still images only). Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not display JXL files by default. This means the preview on this page may not work in your browser, but you can still generate and download the animated JXL file for use in compatible software or workflows.
