Add subtitles to animated GIFs online
Ezgif's online image text editor allows you to write your text over an animated GIF image without losing the animation, it can add subtitles/annotation to the whole clip or change the text on different frames/parts of the GIF.
You can use drag and drop to position the text on the image, choose from a variety of fonts, adjust text and outline colors and opacity.
Upload a GIF or paste a GIF URL to start adding text. It's not possible to edit previously existing text on a GIF image.
Most of the included fonts have full Unicode character support. We also have some Arabic, Korean, Georgian, Hebrew, Thai, Tamil, Telugu, and Devanagari fonts.
If you want to use the previous version of this tool, you can find it here.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add different text to different frames?
Yes. Each text annotation has a "Frames" field where you set the range of frames it applies to. You can add multiple text blocks, each targeting a different frame range, to create subtitle-like captions that change throughout the animation.
What fonts are available?
The tool includes a large selection of fonts grouped by category. Most fonts support full Unicode character sets, including Latin, Cyrillic, CJK, and right-to-left scripts such as Arabic and Hebrew. Specialty fonts for Korean, Georgian, Thai, Tamil, Telugu, and Devanagari are also available.
Can I edit text that is already part of a GIF?
No. Text that has already been rendered into the image pixels cannot be removed or changed. This tool can only add new text on top of the existing image. If you need to remove existing text, you would need to crop or paint over it using an image editor.
How do I add text to a video instead of a GIF?
Use our video subtitle tool, which works with MP4, WebM, AVI, MOV, and other video formats. It offers the same text positioning and styling options as this GIF tool.
