Online animated AVIF maker / converter

This tool lets you create animated AVIF (AVIFS) images. It's very similar to our GIF maker but outputs animation in AVIF format instead of GIF. You can upload both a sequence of images, or already animated files for editing or merging. You can rearrange the frames using drag and drop, set animation speed, add smooth transition (crossfade) between frames.

AVIF stands out by offering significant reductions in file size when compared to GIF, APNG, or WebP. Although a relatively new format, it is already compatible with the latest versions of browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox. AVIF can be used for lightweight and efficient animations, similar to animated GIFs but with better compression and quality.

You can find an up to date table for AVIF support in different browsers at https://caniuse.com/#search=avif.

ezGIF has AVIF support in most of our tools, so you can create and edit animated AVIFs the same way as GIFs, and convert between various animated image formats.

This tool is powered by libavif.

Frequently asked questions

Which browsers support animated AVIF?

Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge all support animated AVIF. Safari has added AVIF support in recent versions. You can check the current browser compatibility at caniuse.com/avif.

How does AVIF compare to WebP and GIF?

AVIF typically produces the smallest files of the three formats. Compared to GIF, AVIF files can be 70–90% smaller at equivalent visual quality. Compared to WebP, AVIF is usually 20–30% smaller, though encoding is slower. AVIF also supports HDR and wide color gamut.

What does the quality setting control?

The quality slider (0–100) controls lossy compression. Higher values produce better image quality but larger files. Unlike WebP, AVIF does not have a separate lossless mode in this tool, but setting quality to 100 minimizes compression artifacts.

Can I convert an existing GIF to animated AVIF?

Yes. Simply upload your animated GIF file and the tool will import all frames automatically. You can then adjust timing, reorder frames, and export as AVIF. You can also convert WebP, APNG, and MNG animations the same way.
