Extract Images from ICO Files

ICO is the icon format used across Windows — for desktop shortcuts, application icons, and website favicons. Unlike most image formats, a single ICO file can bundle multiple versions of the same icon at different sizes (16×16, 32×32, 48×48, 256×256, and more) and color depths, all in one container. Most image editors can't open ICO files directly, which makes this converter useful when you need to work with the actual image data inside them.

What Happens During Conversion

The converter reads the ICO file, finds the highest-resolution image stored inside it, and outputs that as a standard PNG. Transparency is fully preserved — if the icon has transparent regions (which most modern icons do), the PNG will have a proper alpha channel rather than a flat white background.

Common Reasons to Convert ICO to PNG

  • Editing an icon — most graphic editors handle PNG natively, so converting first gives you the icon as a layer you can freely modify, crop, or composite.
  • Extracting a favicon — you found an .ico file from a website and want to see what's inside it, or reuse the icon image in a document or presentation.
  • Archiving — PNG is a lossless format with universal support, making it a safer long-term storage choice than ICO if you don't need the multi-size container.
  • Using on the web — while browsers support ICO for favicons, PNG is more versatile for general use in web pages, social media, or app interfaces.

About ICO Files

The ICO format was introduced by Microsoft in the early days of Windows. Its main feature is the ability to store several resolutions in one file, so the operating system can pick the best size for each context — a tiny 16×16 version for the taskbar and a crisp 256×256 version for the desktop. Modern ICO files often embed PNG-compressed images internally (especially at 256×256), while smaller sizes may use the older BMP-based storage.
